Livestream Hole Card Information Exploitation

Electronic Surveillance ExploitationSkill: Intermediate to Professional

How it works

In livestreamed poker games, RFID readers transmit all players’ hole cards to the production control room for broadcast. If security is inadequate, this information can be leaked to players at the table through various methods: a compromised production crew member passing information, a player watching the delayed livestream, a hidden receiver picking up the RFID signals directly, or a compromised feed providing real-time data. The Stones Gambling Hall case of 2019 is the episode that made the industry take the vulnerability seriously.

On the record

The episode the industry refers to as the Stones Gambling Hall cheating scandal (California, 2019) is what put this vulnerability on the agenda. A player in the venue’s livestreamed $1-3 and $2-5 no-limit hold’em games was publicly accused of using knowledge of opponents’ hole cards after a commentator questioned hands on the stream; the allegations were never tested at trial. No criminal charges were brought. A civil class action was dismissed in 2020, and a defamation action the accused player subsequently filed against several commentators was withdrawn in 2021. The allegations remain unproven and are recorded here as allegations. What the case established for a monitoring room is not who did what, but that an RFID broadcast feed is an attack surface and had been treated as a production concern rather than a security one.
